Chapter 8 - The Verdict of the Bench

The courtroom was stuffy, smelling of old paper and polished wood.
Judge Sterling sat behind the elevated mahogany bench, his expression stern as he reviewed the initial injunction petition filed by Evelyn’s legal team.
Marcus Vance, the plaintiffs' attorney, stood up first, delivering a dramatic, embellished speech about filial duty, corporate responsibility, and the alleged mistreatment of a grieving widow.
'Your Honor, my client is simply asking for a temporary restoration of her standard living stipend and an independent mental evaluation of her son, who has clearly lost his grip on family values,' Marcus argued smoothly.
When Marcus sat down, Judge Sterling looked over his glasses at Julian's legal team.
'Mr. Vance, what do you have to say in response?' the judge asked.
Arthur stood up, buttoning his suit jacket, and walked to the center of the well.
'Your Honor, we submit that this petition is a frivolous, retaliatory abuse of the judicial system designed to harass a corporate executive who lawfully cut off funding after discovering domestic neglect and financial exploitation.'
Arthur clicked a remote in his hand, casting a high-definition video file onto the courtroom's large projection screen.
The quiet courtroom suddenly echoed with the sound of a coughing toddler, followed instantly by video footage of Evelyn and Chloe laughing on the sofa while Elena worked herself to exhaustion in the kitchen.
Evelyn gasped loudly, her face turning bright red as the entire gallery watched her ignore her sick grandchild.
'Furthermore,' Arthur continued smoothly, handing physical folders to the bailiff to distribute to the judge.
'We submit audited financial records proving that Mrs. Sterling has embezzled over two million dollars from corporate subsidiary accounts over the past three years to fund personal real estate in the Caribbean.'
Judge Sterling opened the folder, his eyes scanning the certified financial documents.

The silence in the courtroom grew so heavy you could hear a pin drop.
Judge Sterling looked up from the papers, fixing a harsh, furious gaze directly at Evelyn and her expensive attorney.
