Chapter 4 - The Morning After

The morning sun filtered softly through the sheer curtains of the master bedroom, casting a golden hue across the hardwood floor.
Julian woke up early, quietly slipping out of bed so he wouldn't wake Elena, who was finally sleeping peacefully.
He padded down the stairs to the kitchen to check on Clara.
The house was wonderfully quiet.
Clara was still sleeping soundly in her crib, her fever completely broken, her soft breathing filling the room with steady comfort.
Julian smiled, feeling a deep sense of relief, before heading downstairs to make breakfast.
He had barely poured his first cup of black coffee when his phone began to ring aggressively on the kitchen island.
The caller ID flashed a familiar name: Arthur Sterling, Family Legal Counsel.
Julian pressed accept immediately, knowing his uncle wouldn't call at seven in the morning unless something major had occurred.
'Julian,' Arthur's voice came through the speaker, tight and urgent.
'I hope I'm not waking you, but your mother and sister have already been busy this morning.'
'Let me guess,' Julian said calmly, taking a sip of his coffee.
'They called every lawyer in the city trying to break the trust freeze.'
'Worse than that,' Arthur replied grimly.
'They went straight to the tabloids and filed an emergency injunction petition with the county court, claiming you are financially exploiting an elderly dependent and suffering from severe mental instability.'
Julian let out a short, humorless laugh.
'My mother is seventy-two, plays eighteen holes of golf every Tuesday, and runs a charity board with an iron fist. She is hardly an 'elderly dependent'.'

'The court doesn't know that yet, Julian,' Arthur warned.
'Judge Sterling—no relation to you, thankfully—has scheduled an emergency injunction hearing for tomorrow morning at nine sharp. If you don't show up with robust counter-evidence proving competence and financial autonomy, they could temporarily freeze the corporate holdings.'
