Chapter 1 - The Screen on the Counter
The digital glow of Julian’s smartphone cast a cold, sharp light against the stainless steel cabinets of the kitchen.
While Evelyn and Chloe stood paralyzed in the living room, sputtering with indignation, Julian did not raise his voice a single decibel.
His left arm wrapped securely around Clara, holding the burning, coughing toddler close to his chest, while his right thumb flew across the glass screen with chilling speed.
'Julian, you cannot possibly be serious,' Evelyn shrieked, standing up so abruptly her alpaca throw slid onto the floor.
'We are your family! We came all the way from Palm Beach to support you during your wife’s pregnancy, and this is how you repay us? By throwing us out like common vagrants?'
'Support us?' Julian repeated, his voice dangerously low as he kept his eyes locked on his typing.
'Elena has been running a fever herself for two days, our daughter is sick, the house is a biohazard, and you two have spent forty-eight hours treating my home like a spa while ignoring a crying child. Call that whatever you like, Mother. I call it a gross breach of hospitality.'
Elena finally set down the chef's knife, her hands trembling as she wiped them on a kitchen towel.
She walked over to Julian, placing a gentle hand on his forearm.
'Julian, wait,' she whispered, her voice rough from exhaustion.
'Maybe we should just let them stay until morning. It's late, and—'
'No, Elena,' Julian interrupted firmly, looking down at his wife with absolute resolve.
'They crossed a line the moment they ignored our sick child to watch videos on the couch. They are leaving tonight.'
Julian tapped the final line of text on his screen, hit send, and slipped the phone into his pocket.

'The digital eviction notice has just been filed through my corporate legal portal,' Julian announced, looking directly at his mother and sister.
'Furthermore, the allowance trust tied to Mother's Palm Beach estate has been temporarily frozen pending an audit of your recent expenditures. You will find your corporate credit cards declined within the next sixty seconds.'
