Chapter 6 - The Family's Fall

The destruction of Marcus’s empire had a beautiful ripple effect on the rest of his co-conspirators.

Eleanor, who had spent decades reigning over Atlanta’s high society, attempted to go to her exclusive country club the following afternoon to escape the scandal. She sat in the dining room, ordering a three-hundred-dollar bottle of champagne, ready to spin a lie about how her son was being framed.

When the bill came, her platinum card was declined. The club manager, flanked by security, quietly informed her that her membership had been revoked due to non-payment, and the club was aware of the federal investigation. She was escorted out through the service elevator in front of all her friends.

Julian had it worse. Julian had always been a parasite, living off a massive line of credit that I secretly guaranteed. When I pulled the guarantee, his creditors came calling. Less than forty-eight hours after the airport incident, Julian’s luxury sports car was repossessed in the middle of a busy intersection. By midnight, he was calling Marcus, begging for money to pay off his bookie, completely unaware that Marcus was currently sleeping on a cot in a cheap motel.

And Chloe? The moment Chloe realized Marcus’s bank accounts were seized and he was facing federal prison, she vanished. She packed her bags, blocked his number, and boarded a flight to Miami to find a new mark.

I watched it all unfold from my penthouse, receiving regular updates from Victor. I felt no pity. For years, they had mocked me behind my back, viewing me as the dull, loyal workhorse who funded their extravagant lifestyles. They were finally learning what happened when the workhorse decided to kick down the barn.
