Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The next morning, the news broke.
PROMINENT ATLANTA ATTORNEY INVESTIGATED FOR MASSIVE FRAUD. The headline was splashed across every major legal blog and local news station. Marcus’s face was everywhere, not as the philanthropic legal genius he pretended to be, but as a white-collar criminal.
I was sitting in my sunroom, dressed in a sharp white power suit, when my burner phone buzzed. It was the security team stationed at the Sterling family estate—my estate.
"Ms. Sterling," the head of security said. "Your husband has arrived at the gates. He is demanding entry."
"Put him on speaker through the intercom," I instructed.
A moment later, Marcus's voice echoed through the line. He sounded exhausted, terrified, and desperate. "Olivia! Olivia, please answer the intercom! My key isn't working! The code is changed! There are armed guards here!"
"Hello, Marcus," I said, my voice as calm as a frozen lake.
"Olivia! Oh my god, thank God you're there," he babbled. "Something terrible has happened. The firm is under attack. My accounts are frozen. I need you to open the gates, darling. We need to pool your trust fund. I need cash for a defense attorney."
I let out a soft, melodic laugh. It was a sound he had never heard from me before.
"There is no 'we,' Marcus. And you aren't coming inside."
Silence stretched over the intercom. "What... what do you mean?"
"I was standing above Concourse E yesterday," I said, enunciating every word. "I saw Chloe. I saw your mother. I saw your brother. I saw the matching luggage and the kisses. I saw my entire life being mocked."
"Olivia... no, wait, I can explain! It's not what you think!"
"I don't need an explanation, Marcus. I need you to listen to me very carefully," I said, leaning closer to the phone. "I didn't just freeze your accounts. I liquidated them. I triggered the embezzlement clauses in our merger contract. The house you are standing outside of? It legally belongs to my LLC. The cars? Repossessed. The firm? Bankrupt. I am the one who sent the ledger to the FBI."

"You... you did this?" he whispered, horror dawning on him.
"I built your life, Marcus," I whispered back. "And now, I have unbuilt it. Enjoy the streets." I clicked the phone off.
