Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

A year to the day after that fateful moment at the airport, I stood on the balcony of a private villa in Tuscany, Italy.
The air smelled of crushed grapes, warm earth, and freedom. There was no matching luggage. There was no fake family. There were no secrets, no lies, and no heavy burdens to carry.
I took a sip of espresso, feeling the morning sun warm my face. I had survived the ultimate betrayal and forged it into a weapon that secured my independence forever. Marcus was currently serving his first year in a minimum-security federal facility, stripped of his law license, his money, and his pride.
Footsteps sounded on the terracotta tiles behind me. Strong arms wrapped around my waist, and Victor pressed a soft kiss to the side of my neck.
"Good morning," Victor murmured, his voice thick with sleep.
"Good morning," I replied, leaning back into his solid, comforting embrace.
"I was thinking," Victor said, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked out over the rolling Italian hills. "We have a week left here. We could go down to the coast. Rent a yacht. Disappear for a while. The firm can run itself."
"I like the sound of that," I smiled, turning in his arms to face him. He looked at me not as a convenience, not as a stepping stone, but as an equal. As a partner.
"You look happy, Olivia," Victor said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear.

"I am," I said, realizing it was the truest thing I had ever spoken. "I finally am."
I leaned up and kissed him, the Italian sun bathing us in golden light. Twelve years of a toxic marriage had shattered in a single heartbeat, but from those sharp, broken pieces, I had built a masterpiece. And this was only the beginning.
