Chapter 4 - The Smear Campaign

By the time the sun rose the next morning, the digital warfare had already begun. I was sitting in the uncomfortable vinyl chair next to Sarah's hospital bed, sipping bitter cafeteria coffee, when my phone started exploding with notifications. Messages from cousins, aunts, and family friends poured in, each one more vitriolic than the last.

Confused, I opened Facebook. There it was. A massive, weeping status update from Eleanor, complete with a picture of her looking disheveled and victimized outside a cheap motel.

Heartbroken doesn't even begin to cover it, the post read. After uprooting my entire life to care for my son's difficult, high-maintenance wife, I was physically attacked by my own boy. Sarah demanded I wait on her hand and foot, and when I finally collapsed from exhaustion, David threw me onto the street without a penny to my name. Pray for me, friends. The devil has taken over my son's home.

The comments were a cesspool of outrage. My own aunt called me a "spineless traitor." Cousins I hadn't spoken to in years were threatening to drive down and teach me a lesson. Eleanor was running her classic playbook: strike first, play the victim, and marshal her flying monkeys to do her dirty work.

I watched Sarah sleeping peacefully, the rhythmic beeping of the fetal monitor the only sound in the room. In the past, I would have tried to defuse the situation. I would have called my relatives, pleaded my case, and tried to keep the peace. Not anymore.

I took a screenshot of the post and sent it directly to my personal attorney, Marcus Thorne, a man known in Charleston for being a ruthless corporate litigator.

Marcus, I typed. I need to file for a restraining order, civil theft, and I need a referral for the best criminal prosecutor you know. I want to destroy her.

Marcus replied less than a minute later. Meet me at my office at noon. Bring the financial records.

I looked back at my phone, watching the hateful comments roll in. Let them talk, I thought. They have absolutely no idea what's coming.
