Chapter 15 - The Estate of Our Own

One year later.
The Charleston breeze swept through our backyard, carrying the smell of blooming jasmine and sea salt. I stood on the porch, holding a spatula, watching the scene unfold on the manicured grass.
Sarah, glowing and completely healed, was sitting on a checkered picnic blanket. She was laughing, a bright, musical sound that filled the entire property, as our one-year-old son, Leo, stumbled on wobbly legs toward a bright red ball. He fell on his padded bottom, giggled, and looked up at his mother for approval.
The estate Eleanor had once claimed for "her bloodline" now belonged entirely to us. The memories of her toxicity had been exorcised, replaced by the sounds of children's toys, Saturday morning cartoons, and absolute peace.
My career was flourishing, the stolen money had been safely redeposited into Leo’s restored college fund, and Marcus Thorne had become a regular guest at our Sunday dinners. We had built a chosen family, entirely free of the obligation and guilt that my biological mother had wielded like a weapon.
I walked down the porch steps, carrying a plate of burgers, and sat down on the blanket next to my wife. I pulled her close, kissing the top of her head.
"What are you smiling about?" Sarah asked, leaning into my shoulder as Leo babbled happily at a passing butterfly.

"Just thinking about how lucky I am," I said honestly.
I looked at my son, strong and healthy, and my wife, the fiercest protector I had ever known. We had walked through fire, fighting off the ultimate betrayal from the one person who was supposed to love me unconditionally. But in the ashes of that destruction, we had built a fortress. We were safe, we were happy, and we had won the only battle that truly mattered.
