Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Matriarch

Detective Reynolds stood up, his towering frame casting a shadow over the glass table. "Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for felony aggravated assault on a pregnant person, grand larceny, and wire fraud."

Eleanor let out a shrill, piercing scream that bordered on feral. "No! You can't do this! I am an old woman! I have rights!"

She tried to scramble out of her chair, lunging toward the heavy oak doors, but Reynolds was faster. He caught her by the arm, expertly spinning her around and snapping the cold steel cuffs onto her wrists. The click of the locking mechanism was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

"Greg, do something!" Eleanor shrieked, tears of sheer panic finally spilling down her heavily made-up face. "Martha, call a lawyer!"

Martha was already backing out of the room, looking physically sick. "Don't ever contact me again, Eleanor. You are dead to me. You are dead to this entire family." She turned and fled the room without looking back.

Greg was practically hyperventilating, holding his hands up in surrender as Reynolds read Eleanor her Miranda rights. "Dave, I swear, I’ll testify against her. I’ll give the money back. Just please, don't let them arrest me. Please."

"That will be up to the District Attorney, Mr. Vance," Marcus said smoothly, shuffling his papers. "I suggest you secure your own legal counsel immediately."

Eleanor thrashed against the detective's grip, her eyes wild, spitting venom as she was dragged toward the exit. "You’ll rot in hell for this, David! She’s going to ruin your life! You’re nothing without me!"

"Take her away," I said quietly, turning my back on the woman who gave me birth.

As the doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her unhinged screaming, a profound, overwhelming silence washed over the room. I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for thirty-four years. The monster was caged.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was a call from the hospital.

"Mr. Vance?" the frantic voice of a nurse came through the line. "You need to get here immediately. Sarah’s water just broke. The baby is coming."
