Chapter 9 - The Proposal

Three Years Later.

The house we bought in the suburbs was beautiful—a sprawling, modern farmhouse with a massive backyard that backed up to a quiet forest. It was a home built on trust, hard work, and genuine love.

It was a Saturday evening, and the house smelled like roasted garlic and fresh bread. I was in the kitchen, pouring a glass of wine, while Ethan was in the backyard with Leo. Leo was five now, a whirlwind of energy and imagination, currently dressed in a full Spider-Man costume, battling imaginary villains in the grass.

I stood by the window, watching them. Ethan was running around, acting out dramatic defeats every time Leo "shot a web" at him. My heart swelled until it physically ached with gratitude. Ethan was the only father Leo had ever known. He was patient, kind, and loved my son as fiercely as if he shared his blood.

Ethan caught my eye through the window, smiled, and motioned for me to come outside.

I grabbed my wine glass and stepped out onto the back patio. The string lights above us cast a warm, golden glow over the yard.

"Spider-Man defeated me," Ethan laughed, brushing grass off his knees as he walked up to the patio. "The city is safe."

"Good job, Leo!" I cheered.

Leo giggled, zooming past us to go "rescue" his toy truck from the sandbox.

Ethan turned to me. The playful look in his eyes slowly shifted into something deeper, something incredibly tender. He reached out and gently took the wine glass from my hand, setting it on the patio table.

"Clara," he said softly, taking both of my hands in his.

My breath caught. "Ethan?"

"Five years ago, you walked into the office and completely changed my life," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I watched you build an empire from the ashes of something terrible. I watched you raise the most incredible little boy. You are the strongest, most beautiful woman I have ever known."

He slowly dropped down to one knee.

Tears instantly sprang to my eyes.

Ethan pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a stunning, elegant diamond ring. "I don't just want to be your partner in business, Clara. I want to be your partner in life. Forever. Will you marry me?"

I looked down at the man who had helped me heal, who had loved me at my lowest, and who celebrated me at my highest.

"Yes," I sobbed, pulling him up by his collar and kissing him deeply. "Yes, absolutely yes."

Leo came running over, his Spider-Man mask pushed up on his forehead. "Are we hugging? I want to hug!"

We both laughed, wrapping our arms around Leo, pulling him into a tight, perfect family embrace.
