Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

The silence in the courtroom was so profound you could hear the rain lashing against the tall windows. Marcus looked as though he were physically shrinking into his expensive suit.

"Fraud?" Judge Harrison repeated, her voice dripping with sudden, icy danger. She flipped through the documents Julian had provided. Her eyes scanned the forensic reports, the bank transfers, and the original trust documents.

"Your Honor, this is a misunderstanding," Marcus pleaded, panic edging into his tone. "I built that firm! I put in the eighty-hour weeks! She was just a nurse!"

"A nurse who financed your entire pathetic existence," I finally spoke up, my voice remarkably steady. I turned to look him directly in the eyes. "You used my inheritance to play CEO, Marcus. And you used the profits to buy Chloe diamond necklaces while telling me we couldn't afford to prepare the nursery for our baby."

Chloe’s head whipped toward Marcus. "Wait, you told me your company was worth fifty million and you had full equity! You said we were buying the estate in Aspen!"

I almost laughed at the sheer, unadulterated panic on Chloe’s face. She hadn't fallen in love with Marcus; she had fallen in love with my bank account, laundered through his ego.

"It gets better, Chloe," I said, leaning back in my chair. I looked at Julian, who pulled out a second folder.

"Your Honor," Julian continued, "in light of the egregious financial fraud, we are also filing for immediate freezing of all of Mr. Hayes's personal accounts, as they contain commingled funds stolen from my client. Furthermore, we have evidence that Mr. Hayes has been funneling company assets into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under the name of his mistress, Ms. Chloe Vance."

Judge Harrison’s gavel came down with a sharp crack. "Mr. Hayes, is this true?"

Marcus was hyperventilating. "I... I was protecting my assets! She was going to ruin me!"

"You ruined yourself," I said softly.

"And Ms. Vance," Julian said, turning his shark-like grin toward Chloe. "You might want to secure your own legal counsel. Receiving stolen corporate funds carries a federal prison sentence. Especially since my client is officially pressing charges for embezzlement."

Chloe jumped out of her chair, her emerald dress suddenly looking incredibly foolish. "I didn't know! He told me it was his money! Marcus, tell them I didn't know!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" Marcus snapped, his polished facade entirely gone. He looked at me, his eyes wide and desperate. "Clara, please. You're pregnant with my child. You can't leave me with nothing. We can work this out. I'll drop the divorce!"

"I don't want to drop the divorce, Marcus," I said, my voice echoing with absolute finality. "I want to expedite it. I am taking the house. I am taking the company. And you are going to walk out of this courthouse with exactly what you brought into our marriage: nothing."
