Chapter 1 - The Trap is Sprung

The heavy mahogany doors of Courtroom 3B swung open, and the suffocating silence of the room swallowed us whole. Judge Harrison, a stern woman with a reputation for zero tolerance, sat high on the bench, shuffling through the thick stack of files that contained the sum total of my five-year marriage to Marcus.

Marcus strutted down the center aisle, looking every inch the conquering hero. Chloe clung to his arm, her emerald-green dress a stark contrast to the drab, institutional beige of the courthouse. They took their seats at the petitioner’s table, whispering and suppressing smug smiles.

I walked slowly, my hand resting protectively over my swollen belly. My attorney, Julian Vance, pulled out my chair. Julian was sharp, impeccably dressed, and held a reputation as the most ruthless divorce litigator in Seattle. He gave me a reassuring nod. We had spent the last three months preparing for this exact hour.

"All right, let's get this over with," Judge Harrison announced, peering over her reading glasses. "We are here to finalize the dissolution of marriage between Marcus Hayes and Clara Hayes. I have the signed settlement agreement here, which states that Mr. Hayes will retain full ownership of Hayes Innovations, while Mrs. Hayes will receive a lump sum of two hundred thousand dollars and the marital home. Is this correct?"

Marcus stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Yes, Your Honor. Clara and I have agreed that this is the most equitable split. I built Hayes Innovations from the ground up, and I believe the buyout amount is more than generous given her... current situation."

He didn't even look at me. He just looked at the judge, playing the role of the benevolent, successful ex-husband. Chloe smirked, casually inspecting her fresh manicure.

"Mrs. Hayes?" the judge asked, turning her gaze to me. "Do you agree to these terms?"

I took a deep, steadying breath. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my voice rang out loud and clear.

"No, Your Honor. I do not."

The courtroom went dead silent. Marcus snapped his head toward me, his smug expression instantly evaporating into confusion. Chloe dropped her hand to the table.

"Excuse me?" Marcus hissed under his breath. "Clara, what are you doing? We signed the papers."

Julian stood up, seamlessly taking control of the floor. "Your Honor, my client signed those initial papers under extreme duress and deliberate financial obfuscation by the petitioner. We are submitting an amended filing this morning, along with Exhibit A, which fundamentally alters the asset division."

Judge Harrison frowned, accepting the new manila folder Julian handed to the bailiff. "What exactly is Exhibit A, Mr. Vance?"

"Exhibit A, Your Honor, is the original incorporation charter for Hayes Innovations, dated four years ago. It details the initial seed funding of two million dollars."

Marcus’s face drained of color. He gripped the edge of the table. "That has nothing to do with this! I secured that funding through anonymous angel investors!"

"No, Mr. Hayes, you didn't," Julian corrected smoothly. "You secured it from Clara's irrevocable family trust. Clara’s late father funded your entire company. Furthermore, according to the stipulations of that specific trust, any company founded using its capital remains sixty percent owned by the primary beneficiary. Clara doesn't just own a piece of your company, Marcus. She owns the controlling share. You are essentially her employee."

Chloe let out a sharp gasp. "Marcus, what is he talking about?"

May you like

Marcus was stammering, his confident veneer completely shattered. "That's a lie! Clara doesn't know anything about business! I forged— I mean, I signed the standard spousal waivers!"

"You forged her signature," Julian finished for him, his voice like a whip. "Which we have proven via a forensic handwriting analyst in Exhibit B. Which means the prenup you forced her to sign is completely null and void due to fraud. Clara is taking the company, Marcus. All of it."
