Chapter 4 - The Aftermath

The weeks that followed the courthouse showdown were a whirlwind of legal victories and emotional healing. Julian was merciless. With the forensic evidence we provided, Marcus was ousted as CEO of Hayes Innovations. The board of directors—who were entirely loyal to the money, which was now legally mine—voted unanimously to terminate his employment.

I didn't want to run a tech firm. I was a pediatric nurse. So, I appointed a seasoned executive to take over the day-to-day operations and retained my position as the majority shareholder. My financial future, and my baby’s future, was secured beyond my wildest dreams.

Marcus’s life, however, entered a freefall.

Without access to the company accounts, his lavish lifestyle evaporated overnight. The bank foreclosed on the luxury downtown apartment he had rented for Chloe. I heard through mutual friends that Chloe had packed her designer bags and left him the second his credit cards were declined at a high-end boutique. She vanished back into the woodwork, searching for her next wealthy victim.

I spent my final month of pregnancy living with my mother. Her house was a sanctuary of peace, filled with the smell of home-cooked meals, soft music, and anticipation for the baby.

I spent my days painting the nursery a soft, calming yellow. I read books, went for walks by the water, and slowly pieced my identity back together. I wasn't just Marcus's betrayed wife anymore. I was Clara. I was fierce, capable, and ready to be a mother.

One rainy Tuesday, my phone rang. It was an unknown number, but I answered it.

"Clara?"

It was Marcus. He sounded terrible. His voice was raspy, defeated, and small.

"Julian specifically told you not to call me," I said, my finger hovering over the end-call button.

"I know, I know. Just... please, don't hang up," he begged. "I'm sleeping on my brother's couch, Clara. The feds are investigating me for the embezzlement. I have nothing. Chloe left me. I have absolutely nothing."

"Actions have consequences, Marcus."

"I’m sorry," he broke down, actually sobbing into the phone. "I was a fool. I threw away the best thing that ever happened to me. I love you, Clara. I want to come home. I want to be a dad."

I closed my eyes, resting a hand on my massive belly. A year ago, those words would have been my lifeline. I would have forgiven him. But the woman who would have accepted his apologies died the day I saw him smirking outside the courthouse with his mistress.

"You don't love me, Marcus," I said softly, but firmly. "You love the comfort I provided. You love the money I gave you. You're only sorry because you got caught and you lost. I forgive you, for my own peace of mind. But you will never, ever be a part of my life again."

I hung up the phone and blocked the number. The chapter was permanently closed.
