Arthur drew a silver revolver from his waistline, his hands trembling violently.

"Don't take another step, Elara!" he screamed, aiming the gun at my chest. "I'll kill you! I should have made sure you died in that ambush!"

The truth was finally out in the open.

"So you did know," I said, my voice eerily calm as I walked slowly toward him. "You knew my unit was deployed in that sector, and you sold the coordinates to the highest bidder to cover your tracks."

"You were always a problem!" he cried. "Always asking questions! Always rebelling! You were going to ruin the company!"

I didn't stop walking. I knew men like Arthur. Cowards who hid behind money. When faced with true danger, they crumbled.

"Shoot me, then," I challenged, stopping just two feet from the barrel of his gun. "Do it, Arthur. Prove you’re a man."

He hesitated. His finger twitched on the trigger, but he couldn't pull it. His entire life had been spent paying other people to do his dirty work.

In a flash of movement, I disarmed him, sweeping his legs out from under him. He crashed to the hardwood floor with a pathetic whimper. I grabbed the leather ledger and walked to the window, signaling the FBI tactical team waiting down the mountain.
