Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

Arthur was clever. The shell companies he used to sell the illegal weapons were buried under layers of corporate jargon and proxy directors. We needed a smoking gun.
"He’s moving the money," Vance said, pointing at the satellite feeds of Arthur’s private jet hangar. "He knows the walls are closing in. He's planning to flee to a non-extradition country by Friday."
"He won't leave without the physical ledgers," I realized, tracing my finger over the map of the family properties. "Arthur never trusted digital banking entirely. He keeps a master ledger. If we find that, we tie him directly to the treason."
I knew exactly where it was. The family's hunting lodge in upstate New York. A place I had been banished from as a teenager for refusing to shoot a deer.
"I'm going in," I told Vance.

"You can't go alone," he argued. "Arthur has hired private mercenaries to guard the perimeter."
I rolled up my sleeves, the jagged burn scars catching the fluorescent light. "I know how to handle mercenaries, General. Have the FBI ready on standby."
