Chapter 8 - The Legal Shield

The moment the security guards physically escorted my mother and Chloe out of the hospital lobby—my mother screaming obscenities while Chloe shielded her face from the curious stares of bystanders—I received a text from Victoria Vance. Attached was a PDF file bearing the official seal of the County Family Court.
It was the permanent protective order. Judge Harrison hadn't just granted a standard stay-away order; after viewing the nanny cam footage and reading the neurological report detailing Sarah’s concussion, he had instituted a comprehensive zero-contact mandate. My mother was barred from calling, texting, emailing, or using third parties to contact us. Furthermore, the judge had attached a mandatory police escort order for when she needed to retrieve her remaining personal belongings from our guest room.
At 2:00 PM, I arrived back at our house alongside two uniformed city police officers and Victoria Vance. My mother was waiting in her car parked on the street, her eyes red and puffy from crying, though whether from genuine sadness or humiliated rage, I didn't care. Chloe sat in the driver's seat next to her, glaring at me through the windshield with cold, venomous intensity.
“Ms. Vance,” the elder police officer said, approaching my mother as she stepped out of the vehicle. “You have thirty minutes to retrieve your personal clothing, toiletries, and legal documents from the premises. You are not permitted to speak to your son, speak to his legal counsel, or touch any property belonging to the household. If you violate these parameters, you will be handcuffed immediately. Do you understand?”
My mother gave a jerky, resentful nod, refusing to look me in the eye. For half an hour, I stood on the landing of the second floor with my arms crossed while she silently dragged three designer suitcases out of the guest room. Every time she reached for a framed family photograph or a baby blanket she had bought for Leo, Victoria Vance stepped in with her clipboard.
“That item was purchased with shared household funds and remains the property of the Vance estate,” Victoria stated coldly. “Put it down.”
When the final suitcase was loaded into the trunk of Chloe’s luxury sedan, my mother turned around on the sidewalk, looking up at the front porch where I stood holding the newly rekeyed brass lock in my hand.

“You are throwing away your own blood for a woman who will never be good enough for this family,” my mother hissed, her voice trembling with venom. “When she breaks down again, don't expect me to save you.”
“She didn't break down, Mother,” I replied calmly from the top of the steps. “She survived an abuser. And now that the abuser is gone, our family is finally going to thrive. Get off my property.”
