Chapter 4 - Securing the Vault

I didn't waste another second feeling shocked; I went into absolute protective mode. I knew dealing with a covert narcissist like my mother and a calculated schemer like Chloe required more than just anger—it required airtight legal and digital fortification. I immediately plugged our home network drive into my laptop and downloaded the entire month's worth of nanny cam footage, backing up the files to three separate encrypted cloud storage accounts and a physical external hard drive.

Next, I called my best friend, Marcus, who worked as a cybersecurity analyst for a major defense contractor. When I explained what had happened, he didn't ask questions; he just asked for my IP address.

“I am locking down your entire smart home network right now,” Marcus said over the speakerphone while I heard the rapid clacking of his mechanical keyboard. “I'm revoking all guest Wi-Fi access, changing your router administrative passwords, and disabling any remote bluetooth access to your electronic door locks. If your mother or her little country club spy tries to hack into your cameras or door keypads, they’re going to hit a military-grade firewall.”

“Thank you, man,” I said, rubbing my temples as a migraine began to throb behind my eyes. “I need another favor. Do you know a top-tier criminal defense and family law attorney? Someone who doesn't play nice?”

“You want Victoria Vance,” Marcus replied without hesitation. “She’s a former prosecutor who transitioned into high-stakes family litigation. She specializes in domestic abuse and parental alienation cases. I’ll send you her direct cell number right now. Tell her I referred you.”

By 8:00 PM, I was sitting in the brightly lit offices of Vance Legal Group downtown. Victoria Vance was a sharp-eyed woman in a tailored charcoal suit who listened to my story without interrupting once. When I slid my laptop across her mahogany desk and played the video of Sarah’s collapse and my mother’s cold-blooded text drafting, Victoria’s expression hardened into granite.

“This is extraordinary,” Victoria said, taking notes on a legal pad. “We are looking at multiple actionable offenses here: reckless endangerment of a vulnerable adult, intentional infliction of emotional distress, unauthorized access to a computer system, and identity theft. Tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM, I am walking into the courthouse to file for an Emergency Temporary Restraining Order against your mother. She will not be allowed within one thousand feet of your wife, your child, your home, or your workplace.”

“And what about Chloe Sterling?” I asked.

“Let her come to town,” Victoria said with a razor-sharp smile. “The moment she tries to insert herself into your household, we drag her into the conspiracy charges too.”
