Chapter 14 - Chloe’s Betrayal

If there is one absolute law among covert narcissists and social climbers, it is that loyalty only exists as long as it is mutually beneficial. The moment the ship begins to sink, the rats don't just abandon it—they actively cannibalize each other to save their own skins.

Three days after my mother’s disastrous deposition, Chloe Sterling realized that her fantasy of a high-society romance with me was not only dead, but was about to drag her into a federal courtroom as a co-conspirator in an extortion and cyber-harassment scheme. With her interior design business already hemorrhage clients due to the local rumors surrounding her hospital lobby arrest, Chloe decided to cut her losses and offer up a sacrificial lamb.

On Thursday afternoon, Victoria Vance received a manila envelope delivered by a private courier directly from Chloe’s high-priced criminal defense team. Inside was an external flash drive and a formal Proffer of Evidence—an offer of full prosecution immunity in exchange for state's evidence against Eleanor Vance.

We gathered in Victoria’s office to review the contents of the drive. It was an absolute treasure trove of premeditated malice. Chloe had recorded over forty hours of telephone conversations and saved hundreds of text messages exchanged between herself and my mother over the past six months.

In one audio recording dated two months before Leo was born, my mother’s voice was crystal clear:

“Chloe, darling, don't worry about the baby. Once she gives birth, her hormones will be all over the place. I am going to move into the guest room and systematically wear her down. I’ll mess with her sleep schedule, criticize her cooking, and make sure Ethan only sees her crying and acting crazy when he gets home from work. Within three months, Ethan will be begging me to help him file for sole custody, and we can ship her back to her parents in the country. You just make sure your condo is ready for my grandson.”

In another text chain, when Chloe had expressed minor hesitation about whether Sarah would willingly give up her child, my mother had replied: “She won't have a choice. I am putting small doses of Benadryl in her morning tea so she looks drowsy and negligent whenever Ethan is around. If we have to call Child Protective Services on her ourselves to prove she’s unfit, I will do it without blinking.”

Sarah gasped, covering her mouth with her hand as tears of horror streamed down her face. “She drugged me… Ethan, those mornings where I couldn't keep my eyes open even after three cups of coffee… she was drugging me.”

I felt a cold, murderous rage wash over me, so intense my vision blurred at the edges. My mother hadn't just been mean; she had been actively poisoning my wife while she was breastfeeding our child.

“This moves everything from civil court to the felony criminal docket,” Victoria Vance said, her eyes flashing with a prosecutor's righteous zeal. “Chloe Sterling just handed us the rope to hang your mother for felony poisoning, child endangerment, and conspiracy to commit fraud. I am calling the District Attorney right now. Eleanor Vance isn't going to a retirement home; she is going to state prison.”
