Chapter 4 - The Hunted

They drove a stolen, rusted pickup truck that Mac had secretly left for them a few miles from the diner.

The highway stretched ahead, surrounded by towering pine trees that cast long, dark shadows over the asphalt.

Emily kept checking the rearview mirror, her body tense and ready to spring at the slightest sign of danger.

"You need to relax, sweetheart," Daniel said gently, keeping one hand on the steering wheel and placing the other on her thigh.

"We are untraceable right now," he reassured her, though he kept his own eyes scanning the horizon.

Suddenly, a massive black SUV surged from an unmarked side road, slamming into the rear bumper of their truck.

Emily screamed as the pickup fishtailed wildly across the wet pavement.

Daniel fought the steering wheel, his muscles straining as he desperately regained control of the old vehicle.

"Hold on to the babies!" Daniel roared over the sound of crunching metal.

The SUV accelerated, pulling up alongside them, and the passenger side window rolled down to reveal a man pointing a silenced pistol.

Daniel slammed on the brakes, causing the SUV to shoot past them, the bullets shattering the truck's windshield but missing the family.

He quickly threw the truck into reverse, spinning the wheel sharply to execute a perfect J-turn.

They faced the opposite direction and Daniel slammed the gas pedal to the floor.

The truck's engine screamed in protest, but it launched forward, leaving the stalled SUV behind them.

"Are they hurt?" Daniel yelled, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Emily quickly checked the two bassinets secured tightly in the extended cab.

"They are perfectly fine, they slept right through it," she cried out in relief.

Daniel’s jaw set into an unbreakable line as he took the next exit, disappearing into a maze of rural dirt roads.
