Chapter 1 - The Escape

Daniel stared at the ringing phone in his hand, the screen glaring with his mother’s name like a warning siren.
He did not answer it.
Instead, his thumb pressed down hard on the power button until the screen went entirely black.
He looked up at Emily, whose trembling hands were instinctively pulling the faded blankets tighter around their sleeping sons.
The diner owner, a heavy-set man with graying hair, stepped out from behind the counter.
He lowered the baseball bat slowly, his eyes darting between Daniel’s expensive suit and Emily’s terrified face.
"Mac, he's my husband," Emily whispered, her voice cracking with a mixture of fear and exhausted relief.
Mac frowned, his grip on the wooden bat tightening again as he looked toward the front windows.
Outside, the Pennsylvania rain was coming down in sheets, blurring the neon lights of the diner sign.
Suddenly, the blinding high beams of three black SUVs cut through the darkness, pulling aggressively into the muddy parking lot.
"They're here," Emily gasped, backing away until her shoulders hit the storage room wall.
Daniel’s instincts as a fiercely protective man finally snapped into full gear.
He realized in a single heartbeat that the woman who raised him was trying to destroy his family.
"Is there a back exit?" Daniel demanded, turning to Mac with eyes that brokered no argument.
Mac nodded grimly, already moving toward the kitchen doors.
"Through the pantry, out the loading dock, and into the woods," Mac instructed quickly.
Daniel didn't hesitate.
He scooped up one bassinet while Emily desperately grabbed the other, her protective maternal instincts taking over.
They rushed through the swinging kitchen doors just as the chime on the front diner entrance rang loudly.
Heavy boots stomped against the linoleum floor behind them.
"Search the place," a gruff voice echoed from the dining room, a voice Daniel instantly recognized as his mother’s head of private security.
Daniel’s blood ran cold, but he kept moving, pushing Emily gently ahead of him into the damp, freezing night.
They ran blindly into the dense Pennsylvania woods, the rain instantly soaking through Daniel’s expensive wool coat.

He didn't care about the cold, the mud, or the money he was leaving behind.
All that mattered was the woman running beside him and the two tiny lives they carried in their arms.
