Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Apple

Armed with the video confession, the photos of the life insurance policy, and the evidence of the tampered brakes, Clara had everything. But she couldn't just hand it to Arthur. Arthur was still in denial, still clinging to the illusion of his perfect new wife.
Clara needed to expose Vanessa in a way Arthur could not unsee.
That weekend, Arthur was hosting the biggest event of the year at their estate: a massive gala to announce his company’s newest tech merger. Hundreds of investors, reporters, and elite guests filled the mansion.
Clara was supposed to be fired. Vanessa had demanded her termination after the car accident, claiming Clara was an unfit driver. But Arthur, driven by a lingering guilt regarding Leo, had allowed Clara one final night to say goodbye to the boy.
It was a fatal mistake on Vanessa's part.
Clara knew Vanessa’s endgame. The centipede hadn't worked. The car crash hadn't worked. Vanessa was running out of time before the insurance fraud would become impossible to execute. She would try to finish the job tonight, amidst the chaos of the party.
Clara hid in the shadows of the upstairs hallway, watching the door to Leo’s room.
At 10:00 PM, while Arthur was giving his keynote speech downstairs, the hallway remained empty. Then, the soft click of heels echoed on the hardwood.

Vanessa approached Leo’s door. She was wearing a stunning red evening gown. In her hand was a small syringe—the same clear liquid Clara had seen in the safe. Potassium chloride. It would induce a fatal heart attack that looked entirely natural in a child recovering from severe trauma.
Clara hit the record button on her phone and stepped out of the shadows.
