Chapter 4 - The Hidden Safe

The opportunity arrived on a Tuesday night. Arthur and Vanessa were mandated to attend a high-profile Silicon Valley charity gala. Clara was left alone at the estate with Leo, who was sleeping soundly under the watchful eye of a new, trusted security guard Clara had personally vetted.
Clara slipped into the master suite. She knew Vanessa was hiding something tangible. Women like Vanessa didn't leave things to chance; they kept receipts.
She systematically searched the massive walk-in closet, checking behind designer handbags and rows of expensive shoes. Finally, behind a false panel in the jewelry armoire, she found it: a small, biometric wall safe.
A fingerprint scanner.
Clara smiled grimly. Her time as an EMT had taught her how to think on her feet. She went to Vanessa’s vanity, took a piece of clear lifting tape and a dusting brush used for setting powder. She carefully dusted the glass screen of Vanessa's discarded backup iPad. She found a perfectly preserved thumbprint, lifted it with the tape, and pressed it against the scanner.
With a soft click, the safe opened.
Inside, Clara found a burner phone, a vial of clear liquid, and a stack of legal documents. She took photos of everything with her phone. The documents were the smoking gun: a recently amended life insurance policy on Leo for ten million dollars, with Vanessa as the sole beneficiary in the event of Arthur's death.

She turned on the burner phone. There was only one contact saved: The Exterminator.
Clara quickly forwarded the text threads to her own device. She had the proof. But as she closed the safe, the bedroom door clicked open.
