Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting
They didn't find the doctor.
When Arthur’s lawyers tried to contact the "Dr. Aris" who had signed Leo’s home-care chart, the phone number led to a disconnected line. The medical license number provided was a forgery.
Despite the glaring red flags, Vanessa's manipulation was masterful. Back at the sprawling Sterling estate in Silicon Valley, she began isolating Arthur. She hired a team of private investigators to look into Clara’s past, twisting innocuous details into sinister motives.
"She's unhinged, Arthur," Vanessa whispered late one night in the master suite, pouring him a glass of scotch. "She was fired from the hospital for insubordination. She’s trying to frame me so she can play the hero. She planted that bug."
While Vanessa spun her web, Clara spent every waking moment guarding Leo. The boy was recovering, the infection subsiding, but his terror remained.
"She told me a secret, Clara," Leo whispered one afternoon while they sat in the sunroom playing chess.
"Who did?" Clara asked, moving a pawn.

"Vanessa." Leo looked around nervously. "When Dad was on a business trip last month. She came into my room and told me that Dad’s heart is weak. She said if I stress him out, he’ll die just like Mommy did. And then she’ll be the only one left to take care of me."
Clara’s blood ran cold. It wasn't just physical torture; Vanessa was psychologically dismantling a child to ensure his silence. Clara realized she couldn't just get Vanessa fired. She had to destroy her completely, or Leo would never be safe.
