Chapter 10 - The Protector

The fallout was spectacular.

Vanessa was arrested and charged with attempted murder, insurance fraud, and child endangerment. Denied bail, she was locked in a maximum-security county jail, her designer clothes replaced by an orange jumpsuit. Silas rolled on her to avoid a heavier sentence, providing the FBI with a mountain of evidence.

Marcus, the corrupt security guard, was apprehended trying to flee the state.

Three months later, the Sterling estate was quiet. The toxic, suffocating atmosphere Vanessa had cultivated was entirely gone, replaced by sunlight and the sound of a little boy laughing.

Leo was running across the lawn. His leg had completely healed. There was a small, pale scar where the bites had been, but the psychological wounds were closing faster than anyone expected.

Arthur stood on the patio, holding two cups of coffee. He handed one to Clara, who was watching Leo chase a butterfly.

"I don't know how to ever repay you," Arthur said quietly, looking at the ground. "I was blind. I put him in danger because I was too weak to be alone."

"You were grieving, Arthur," Clara said, taking a sip of her coffee. "Predators like Vanessa look for grief. It’s their favorite hunting ground. But you believed me when it mattered."

Arthur looked at her. "The agency called. They said your contract is up next week. I know you're an EMT. I know being a nanny was just a temporary gig for you."

Clara looked out at Leo. The boy turned, waving enthusiastically at her. Clara waved back, a genuine, warm smile breaking across her face.

"I've worked in emergency rooms for five years, Arthur," Clara said softly. "I've saved a lot of lives. But I've never had the chance to actually watch one grow afterward."

She turned back to Arthur.

"If you'll have me, I'd like to stay. Not as a temporary contractor. As a guardian."

May you like

Arthur smiled, the first real, unburdened smile Clara had seen from him. "You have the job, Clara. For as long as you want it."

They stood together on the patio, watching Leo run. The shadows of the past had finally lifted, and for the first time in a long time, the Sterling family was truly safe.
