Chapter 9 - The Long Road Back

The next six months were the most challenging period of Luca’s entire life.

He transferred control of the syndicate to his most trusted captain, legally dissolving his ties to the criminal underworld.

He focused entirely on Dr. Thorne's grueling rehabilitation program.

There were days when his legs simply refused to cooperate, buckling under his weight.

There were nights when the nerve pain was so intense he could barely breathe.

But every time he wanted to quit, he looked out the window.

He watched Maya and Tommy playing on the estate grounds, laughing without a care in the world.

He watched Elena managing the household, creating a home out of a fortress.

They were his strength, his motivation, and his ultimate salvation.

By the fourth month, he abandoned the wheelchair completely in favor of titanium crutches.

By the fifth month, he downgraded to a single, heavy wooden cane.

His muscles began to rebuild, his confidence returning with every agonizing step.

Maya became his unofficial cheerleader, walking beside him during his daily laps around the gardens.

"You are walking like a zombie today, Dad," Maya teased him one bright Tuesday afternoon.

"Zombies are slow, Maya," Luca grinned, leaning heavily on his cane.

"I am more like a very tired bear."

Tommy jogged up to them, tossing a baseball high into the air and catching it flawlessly.

"Can you hit a ball yet, Mr. Costello?" Tommy asked challengingly.

Luca stopped walking, looking at the baseball diamond in the distance.

The grass was perfectly manicured, the bases stark white against the red dirt.

He had built it for a future he thought he had lost forever.

"Give me one more month, Tommy," Luca promised, a fierce light in his eyes.

"And I will hit it right over the backstop."

Tommy grinned, tossing the ball again.

"I'll hold you to that, old man," the boy laughed, sprinting back toward the house.

Luca watched him go, feeling Elena slip her hand comfortably into his free hand.

"He's getting mouthy," Luca chuckled.

"He's getting comfortable," Elena corrected softly, leaning her head against his shoulder.

"We all are."
