Chapter 8 - Cleaning House

The transition of power was swift, brutal, and entirely necessary.

Silvio Vance and his loyalists were quietly removed from the chessboard permanently.

The syndicate captains fell back into line with terrifying obedience, terrified of the man who had conquered death itself.

Luca returned to the estate that evening, completely exhausted but fundamentally changed.

The adrenaline had faded, leaving his newly awakened nerves screaming in agony.

He collapsed into his wheelchair the moment he entered the private study.

Elena was waiting for him, pouring a hot cup of chamomile tea.

She did not ask about the violence, nor did she care about the politics of his world.

She only cared about the man sitting in front of her.

"You pushed yourself too hard today," Elena scolded gently, handing him the steaming cup.

"I had to show them I wasn't broken," Luca replied, his hands shaking slightly as he took the tea.

"You don't have to show me anything, Luca," she said softly, sitting on the armrest of his chair.

"I loved you when you were walking twelve years ago, and I loved the man in this chair yesterday."

Luca leaned his head against her hip, closing his eyes and finding a profound sense of peace.

The empire was secure, his enemies were vanquished, and his family was safe.

For the first time in his life, the violence felt finished.

He opened his eyes and looked at the glowing embers in the fireplace.

"I am retiring, Elena," Luca announced quietly.

Elena paused, looking down at him in genuine shock.

"Retiring?" she echoed.

"I have enough legitimate businesses to sustain us for ten lifetimes," Luca explained.

"I don't want Maya growing up in a world where she needs armed guards to play outside."

"I want to be a father, not a boss."

Elena smiled, a bright, beautiful expression that lit up the dimly lit study.

She leaned down and kissed him deeply, sealing the promise of a brand new life.

"Then we have a lot of work to do," she whispered against his lips.

"Starting with your physical therapy."
