Chapter 1 - The Fire in the Nerves

The pain was not a subtle thing.
It arrived like a lightning strike in the dead of night, burning through veins that had been dormant for over a decade.
Luca Costello gripped the heavy wooden armrests of his wheelchair until the wood groaned in protest.
He was sitting alone in the converted medical suite of his estate, staring at the specialized physical therapist he had flown in from Switzerland.
Dr. Aris Thorne was a man who did not ask questions about bullet holes in the walls or armed guards at the doors.
"The antidote compound is aggressive, Mr. Costello," Dr. Thorne said quietly.
"It is actively stripping the chemical blockade from your neural pathways."
Luca closed his eyes as a violent tremor shook his right leg.
It was the first involuntary movement he had experienced in twelve years.
It felt as though someone was pouring crushed glass into his knee joints.
"How long until I can bear weight?" Luca asked, his voice rough with suppressed agony.
Dr. Thorne checked his tablet, adjusting the dosage of the intravenous drip.
"Your muscles have atrophied significantly, but your core remains remarkably strong," the doctor replied.
"If you survive the pain of the nervous system rebooting, you could attempt standing in six weeks."
Luca opened his eyes, staring at his trembling boots.
Six weeks was a lifetime in the Chicago underworld.
If the man who poisoned him realized the truth was out, six weeks would be more than enough time to stage a coup.
He needed to keep his recovery an absolute secret from everyone, especially his own captains.
Only three people in the world knew the truth: Dr. Thorne, Elena, and himself.
A soft knock on the reinforced door broke his intense concentration.
"Come in," Luca commanded, masking his heavy breathing.
The heavy door swung open to reveal Elena Harper.
She looked entirely out of place in the sterile, clinical room, wearing a simple wool sweater and holding a tray of black coffee.
Her eyes darted to the IV line in his arm, calculating the gravity of the situation.
"Maya is asking for you," Elena said softly.
"She wants to know if you are coming to the porch to watch her practice her turns."
Luca felt a sudden, profound shift in his chest.
For twelve years, he had lived only for control, for power, and for the cold administration of his empire.
Now, he found himself desperate to simply sit on a porch and watch a little girl dance.
"Tell her I will be there in ten minutes," Luca said.
Elena nodded slowly, placing the coffee tray on the desk.
"You look like you are in hell, Luca," she whispered.
May you like
"I am climbing out of it, Elena," he replied, meeting her gaze.
"And when I reach the top, the man who put me there is going to take my place."
