Chapter 8 - Marcus's Downfall
Marcus’s trial was far more complex, a labyrinth of corporate law and forensic accounting.
He hired the most expensive defense team in the country, attempting to argue that Julian had authorized the offshore accounts as a tax strategy. He tried to paint me as a gold-digging widow who was destroying the company for personal gain.
But Julian’s genius struck from beyond the grave one last time.
During the discovery phase, Arthur found a secondary hidden file on Julian’s server. It was a video Julian had recorded three days before he died, anticipating exactly what Marcus would try to do.
The video was played in federal court.
Julian looked frail, his cheeks sunken from the cancer, but his eyes were blazing with protective fire.
“If you are watching this, it means Marcus Thorne has attempted a hostile takeover,” Julian’s recorded voice rasped. “Let this serve as my sworn, legal declaration. Marcus has been stealing from this company. I have compiled the IP addresses, the routing numbers, and the dates of every fraudulent transfer. He is a thief, and a traitor. My wife is the sole inheritor of my legacy. Do not let him win.”
