Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The boardroom erupted into murmurs. Marcus’s face went completely pale, his charming facade cracking instantly.
“What is the meaning of this?” Marcus stammered. “You shouldn't be here. You need medical attention!”
“The only person who needs attention is your defense attorney,” Arthur said, tossing a massive stack of financial documents onto the center of the table.
“Gentlemen of the board,” I said, walking slowly to the head of the table, forcing Marcus to step aside. “Marcus Thorne has spent the last three years embezzling nearly forty million dollars through phantom vendor accounts. When my husband discovered this, Marcus panicked. He conspired with my estranged stepfather to coerce me into signing over my shares so he could bury the evidence.”
“Lies!” Marcus shouted, slamming his fist on the table. “She’s hysterical! Security, remove her!”
No one moved. The federal marshals stepped closer to Marcus.
“We have the hospital recordings, Marcus,” Arthur stated coldly. “We have Edward's full confession. He flipped on you the second he realized he was facing twenty years. He handed over every encrypted email you sent him.”
Marcus backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, his chest heaving. “Julian built this with me! It’s mine! He was dying anyway!”
The room went dead silent. He hadn't just confessed to the fraud; he had shown them his total lack of humanity.
“Execute the fail-safe, Arthur,” I commanded.
Arthur tapped his tablet. Across the room, the massive presentation screen flashed red. Every single offshore account Marcus had secretly maintained was frozen, flagged, and routed directly to the FBI’s cyber division.

“You’re finished, Marcus,” I whispered.
The marshals grabbed his arms, snapping the handcuffs shut.
