Chapter 1 - The Breach

The heavy boots outside didn’t just halt; they organized.

Inside the stifling, barricaded hospital room, the triumphant smirks on my stepfamily’s faces began to melt into masks of confusion. Jason, still clutching my newborn daughter Chloe, glanced nervously toward the heavy wooden door.

“Did you call a nurse?” my stepmother, Helen, whispered, stepping away from the privacy curtain.

“It’s just a shift change. Keep quiet,” my stepfather, Edward, snapped. He turned back to me, waving the forged transfer document in my face. “Sign the papers, or we walk out of here with the girl. You can keep the boy. We only need one to guarantee our leverage.”

Before I could spit the blood from my bitten lip to answer him, the heavy oak door didn’t just open—it exploded inward.

The deadbolt snapped like a dry twig. Three armed hospital security guards flooded the room, instantly followed by four uniformed police officers, weapons drawn and leveled at my stepbrother.

“Drop the child! Put the baby in the bassinet and step back with your hands in the air!” the lead officer roared.

Jason froze. The arrogant swagger he had carried a moment ago vanished, replaced by the trembling cowardice I always knew was beneath it. He hastily lowered Chloe into the plastic bassinet next to her crying twin brother, Leo, and threw his hands up.

“This is a misunderstanding!” Edward shouted, trying to block the police from handcuffing his son. “This is a private family matter! My stepdaughter is heavily medicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis. We were taking the child for her own safety!”

“Save it for the judge,” a sharp, cold voice cut through the chaos.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped into the room, flanked by two detectives. It was Arthur Vance, Julian’s fiercely loyal corporate attorney. He looked at my stepfamily like they were vermin.

“Agent Vance to you,” Arthur said, holding up a federal ID. “And according to the cloud-synced audio recording I just listened to on my drive over here, you weren't trying to protect anyone. You were committing felony kidnapping and extortion.”

I sagged back against the hospital pillows, tears of pure relief spilling down my cheeks. Two nurses rushed past the police, checking on Leo and Chloe, gently handing both of my crying babies back into my arms.

As Edward, Helen, and Jason were dragged out of the room in handcuffs, screaming threats and demanding lawyers, Arthur walked over to my bed. His expression softened.

“Julian knew they would try something,” Arthur whispered. “But we didn't realize how deep the rot went. You need to rest, because tomorrow, we are going to war.”
