Chapter 5 - The Facebook Smear Campaign

News of Valerie’s arrest tore through the extended family like a wildfire.

Unable to contact David directly, his aunt took her outrage to the public arena of Facebook.

She posted a massive, rambling status update claiming David was a deadbeat father who had brutally assaulted her innocent daughter.

"My poor Valerie is in a holding cell because my evil nephew wants to extort us for money!" she wrote.

She cleverly left out any mention of Leo’s injuries, painting David as an unprovoked monster.

The post immediately garnered hundreds of shocked comments, sympathetic likes, and angry reactions from distant relatives and family friends.

A few people even shared the post, calling for David to be arrested instead.

David was at the playground pushing Leo on the swings when his lawyer called to inform him of the post.

"Let her dig her own grave," David told Marcus calmly over the phone.

"Exactly," Marcus replied. "I am drafting a massive defamation lawsuit as we speak."

"She just broadcasted defamatory lies to thousands of people, and we have the medical proof to ruin her."

David hung up the phone and watched his son laugh as the swing went higher.

He felt a deep sense of peace knowing that the trap had been set.

His aunt thought she was winning the narrative by playing the victim online.

She had no idea that she had just handed David the final nail for her financial coffin.

The Vance family was about to learn that the internet was permanent.
