Chapter 6 - The Hidden Benefactor

Weeks slowly turned into agonizing months as the high-profile trial approached.
Clara and Leo had quietly moved into a heavily secured apartment funded by a mysterious donor.
Arthur visited them every single afternoon, helping Clara assemble baby furniture and bringing fresh groceries.
One rainy evening, Clara finally decided to ask the burning question.
"Arthur, how can we possibly afford this luxury apartment and the private security detail?"
Arthur slowly set his tea cup down on the glass coffee table.
He let out a long, heavy sigh before looking directly into Clara's eyes.
"Harrison Thorne is not your biological father, Clara."
The words hit her like a physical blow to the chest, leaving her completely breathless.
"Your mother was a wonderful woman who was trapped in a highly abusive marriage with Harrison."
Arthur's eyes grew misty as he recalled the painful memories of the distant past.
"We fell in love, and we were planning to run away together right before she suddenly passed away."
Clara gasped, dropping her spoon into her bowl of soup.
"You are my real father?" she whispered, her voice trembling violently.
Arthur slowly nodded, a single tear escaping his weathered eye.
"Harrison kept me around as a groundskeeper just to humiliate me and punish me, but I stayed simply to watch over you."

Clara jumped up from her chair and threw her arms around the old man's neck.
For the first time in her entire life, she finally understood why Arthur had always been her only fierce protector.
