Chapter 7 - The Safehouse

Within an hour, Clara and Lily were escorted into Julian’s heavily fortified mansion on the edge of the city.
Julian met them at the grand entrance, his face pale with worry.
He pulled Clara into a sudden, fierce embrace, completely abandoning his usual cold exterior.
“I am so sorry,” Julian whispered into her hair.
Clara trembled in his arms, finally letting the shock wash over her.
“They came for us,” she sobbed quietly.
“They will never get near you again, I swear it on my life,” Julian promised.
He had his staff prepare a luxurious guest wing for them, complete with toys for Lily.
Later that night, after Lily was asleep, Clara joined Julian in the library.
He poured her a glass of wine, and they sat by the roaring fireplace.
“The men who attacked you are part of the Maroni family,” Julian explained gently.
Clara froze, staring deeply into the flames of the fire.
“Maroni,” she repeated, her voice turning hard and bitter.
“Do you know that name?” Julian asked, leaning forward in his leather chair.
“They own the construction firm that built the scaffolding my husband died on,” Clara revealed.
Julian’s eyes widened as the pieces of the puzzle clicked together.
“They cut the safety budgets, ignored the warnings, and covered up his death,” she cried.
Julian felt a burning rage ignite inside his soul.
These monsters had not only tried to kill his grandmother, but they had also destroyed Clara’s family.

“We are going to destroy them, Clara,” Julian vowed darkly.
“And we are going to make them pay for Daniel.”
