Chapter 6 - The Discovery

Julian paced across his penthouse office, his mind calculating every possible angle.
The mechanic's report confirmed that the SUV’s brake lines had been deliberately severed.
Someone had tried to assassinate his grandmother to send him a message.
“Who did this?” Julian demanded, glaring at Elias.
“The Maroni Syndicate,” Elias answered grimly.
“They want to take over the waterfront developments, and they know Eleanor is your weakness.”
Julian slammed his fist onto the desk, cracking the polished wood.
“They failed because of Clara,” Julian realized, a cold dread washing over him.
“Yes,” Elias nodded slowly.
“And the Maronis know it was Clara who ruined their hit.”
Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs as panic set in.
“Send a heavily armed team to Clara’s apartment right now,” Julian barked.
Across town, Clara was cooking dinner in her tiny kitchen.
The security of her new job had finally allowed her to relax.
Suddenly, the front door of her apartment was kicked violently off its hinges.
Three masked men rushed into the room, holding heavy steel pipes.
Clara screamed, instantly pushing Lily under the solid oak dining table.
She grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the stove and swung it wildly.
The heavy pan connected with the first attacker’s jaw, sending him crashing to the floor.
Before the other two could grab her, the windows shattered as Julian’s men breached the apartment.

Gunfire erupted, and the attackers were swiftly subdued and dragged away.
Clara huddled on the floor, holding her crying daughter tightly against her chest.
