Chapter 4 - Uncovering the Motive

I spent the next three days sitting in a hospital chair right next to Liam's bed.
He was recovering incredibly well, his resilient spirit shining through despite the trauma.
While he slept, I met with detectives to figure out the one question that kept haunting me.
Why would my father try to kill his own grandson?
The answer arrived in a manila folder brought in by my late husband’s former attorney.
“I saw the news, and I realized I needed to bring this to you immediately,” the lawyer said, sitting across from me in the hospital cafeteria.
He slid a copy of my late mother’s secret trust fund documents across the table.
My mother had passed away five years ago, leaving her entire fortune to Richard, or so I had thought.
“Your mother amended her will secretly before she died,” the lawyer explained quietly.
“She knew Richard was squandering the family business to fund Chloe's lavish lifestyle.”
“She left a massive, untouchable trust fund entirely to Liam, which transfers to him upon his eighteenth birthday.”
I stared at the paperwork, the blood rushing in my ears.
“But if something tragic were to happen to Liam before he turned eighteen?” I asked, dreading the answer.
“The trust dissolves, and the entire seventy million dollars reverts back to Richard’s control,” the lawyer confirmed.
I felt violently ill.
My father had drugged my beautiful, innocent boy for seventy million dollars.
Chloe had pushed him into the pool, likely promised a massive cut of the money to fund her dream wedding and lifestyle.
They thought they could frame it as a tragic drowning accident caused by my negligence.
They hadn't counted on me fighting back.
I handed the documents straight over to the lead detective.

“This bumps the charges up to conspiracy to commit murder for financial gain,” the detective said grimly.
“They are never seeing the outside of a prison cell again.”
