Chapter 3 - The Interruption

Back at the estate, Richard and Chloe had apparently decided the best course of action was to pretend nothing happened.
I later learned from a sympathetic cousin that they had ushered everyone inside for the catered dinner.
Chloe was halfway through a tearful toast about how hard it was to deal with a "mentally unstable" sister.
She was raising a glass of champagne when the front doors of the mansion were kicked open.
Six armed police officers swarmed into the grand dining room.
“Richard Sterling and Chloe Sterling, drop your glasses and put your hands where we can see them!” the lead detective shouted.
The entire room erupted into chaos as guests screamed and backed away from the table.
Richard puffed out his chest, trying to use his billionaire status as a shield.
“Do you have any idea who I am?” Richard bellowed, his face turning purple with rage.
“I play golf with the mayor, and I will have your badges for this intrusion!”
The detective didn't blink, simply snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Richard's wrists.
“You can tell the mayor all about it from your cell, sir,” the detective replied coldly.
Chloe dropped her champagne glass, the crystal shattering loudly against the marble floor.
“You can’t do this, my wedding is in two days!” she shrieked, trying to run toward her fiancé, Mark.
An officer grabbed her arm and cuffed her quickly.
Mark, who had been standing next to her, slowly backed away with a look of pure horror on his face.
“Mark, do something!” Chloe sobbed, struggling against the officer's grip.
Mark looked at her, then looked at Richard, and finally shook his head in disgust.
“I heard the kid scream, Chloe,” Mark said quietly.
“I’m done.”
Mark walked out of the room, leaving Chloe screaming his name as she was dragged out to the squad cars.

By the time my father and sister were pushed into the back of the cruisers, camera flashes were lighting up the driveway.
