Chapter 5 - The Ambush

Before they could leave, the estate's security gates beeped. Julian’s black SUV rolled up the driveway.
Julian had noticed Arthur accessing the encrypted European files earlier that afternoon. He knew the clock had run out.
"Take them to the panic room," Arthur whispered to Clara, pulling a registered Glock from his desk drawer. "Do not come out, no matter what you hear."
Clara grabbed the girls and ran. But Julian didn't come alone. Two armed men kicked in the back doors of the kitchen. Arthur engaged them in a brutal, desperate firefight in the living room, buying Clara time.
Clara made it to the basement, but the panic room door jammed. One of Julian’s men came down the stairs, his weapon raised.
Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy cast-iron wrench from the utility closet and swung it with the ferocity of a mother protecting her young. The man went down hard. She dragged the girls into the reinforced room, slammed the heavy steel door, and threw the deadbolt just as Julian himself reached the bottom of the stairs.

"Open the door, Clara!" Julian screamed, pounding on the steel. "He’s dead! Arthur is dead! It's just you and the brats now!"
Clara pulled the girls into her chest, covering their ears, her heart pounding against her ribs. She refused to believe Arthur was gone.
