Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Two years later.

The farmhouse was noisy. The good kind of noisy.

Maya and Mia, now eight years old, were chasing a golden retriever puppy through the living room, their laughter echoing off the high wooden ceilings. They were completely healed, top of their classes, and fiercely protective of their new family.

Arthur sat in a worn leather armchair by the fireplace, reviewing a contract for a new philanthropic foundation he had started in Elena’s memory—a charity dedicated to supporting victims of corporate fraud.

The kitchen door swung open, and Clara walked in, carrying a tray of warm cookies. She moved a little slower these days, her hand resting protectively over her very pregnant belly.

Arthur immediately put his paperwork down, walked over, and took the tray from her.

"I can still carry cookies, Arthur," she laughed, swatting his arm.

"You aren't carrying anything heavier than a fork," Arthur smiled, kissing her forehead, then leaning down to kiss her stomach. "How's the new baby doing?"

"Kicking like crazy. I think he wants to play with his sisters," Clara smiled, leaning her head against Arthur’s chest.

Arthur looked at the girls playing on the rug, then at the beautiful woman in his arms, and listened to the sounds of his home. There was no more silence. There was only life, loud and vibrant and perfect.

The man who had once imagined everything dead had finally remembered how to live.
