Chapter 3 - The Breaking Point

When they finally pulled me out of the MRI, my lower back was throbbing with a dull, relentless ache, but my left leg remained frighteningly silent. I was wheeled back into a private trauma room. Dad was already there, pacing the floor like a caged animal. A tall woman in a white coat—Dr. Aris, the on-call neurosurgeon—was reviewing images on a tablet.

"What's the verdict?" Dad asked, his voice shaking.

Dr. Aris looked up, her expression serious but steady. "The good news is that the spinal cord is not severed. However, the blunt force trauma from the fall caused a massive hematoma—a blood clot—to form right against the lumbar spine. It’s compressing the nerves that control her left leg. That’s what’s causing the paralysis."

"Can you fix it?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"We need to perform an emergency decompression surgery to evacuate the clot and relieve the pressure on the cord," Dr. Aris explained. "If we wait, the nerve damage could become permanent. We are prepping an operating room right now."

Dad sank into a chair, running his hands over his face. The weight of his inaction was finally breaking him. "Do it. Whatever she needs, do it."

Before the surgeon could leave, a detective walked into the room. He flashed his badge. "Mr. Vance? I'm Detective Miller. I need a word with you about your wife. She's currently in custody, claiming this is a massive misunderstanding and that your daughter is a troubled teen prone to theatrics."

Dad stood up, his jaw clenched tight. The passive, conflict-avoidant man I had known for ten years was gone, replaced by a father who had nearly lost his child.

"My wife is a liar," Dad said firmly. "She wanted my daughter's trust fund to pay off her own son's gambling debts. When my daughter refused to sign the transfer papers, Evelyn pulled the stool out from under her. Then she stole my phone so I couldn't call for help. I will sign whatever statement you need, Detective. I want her charged."

The detective nodded, taking out a notepad. "That's exactly what I needed to hear."
