Chapter 10 - The Father's Stand

Day two of the trial belonged to my father. When his name was called, he stood up, buttoned his suit jacket, and walked to the witness stand. He swore on the Bible, his voice clear and unwavering.

Ms. Davis started gently, walking him through the timeline of his marriage to Evelyn, the financial drain she caused, and the tension regarding my grandfather's trust. Then, she brought him to the day of the incident.

"Mr. Vance, can you describe the defendant's demeanor when she demanded your daughter sign the papers?" Ms. Davis asked.

"She was cold. Desperate," Dad answered, looking directly at the jury. "She told my daughter she was hoarding wealth while the family struggled."

"And then what happened?"

"My daughter pushed the papers away and refused. Evelyn grabbed the back of the heavy wooden barstool and violently yanked it backward. She didn't slide it. She pulled it with all her strength."

Dad’s voice cracked, but he pushed through. He detailed the horrifying sound of my spine hitting the floor, the immediate paralysis, and the most crucial moment of all.

"I pulled out my phone to call 911," Dad testified, staring directly at Evelyn. "I managed to hit the SOS slider right as she grabbed my wrist and physically ripped the phone from my hands. She told me to carry her to the car, or let her lie there until morning."

Evelyn’s lawyer jumped up for cross-examination, trying to poke holes. "Mr. Vance, isn't it true you're just looking for a favorable divorce settlement? You didn't stop her. You didn't fight back. Sounds like you're trying to shift the blame for your own parental negligence."

Dad leaned into the microphone. "I will regret my inaction for the rest of my life. I was a coward that day. But my cowardice doesn't change the fact that Evelyn committed a violent crime. I am guilty of not protecting my daughter. Evelyn is guilty of nearly paralyzing her."

The courtroom fell dead silent. Even the defense attorney had no rebuttal for that level of raw honesty.
