Chapter 12 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
When the bailiff announced they had reached a verdict, a tense hush fell over the courtroom. Dad gripped my hand so tightly his knuckles turned white. Evelyn stood next to her lawyer, her arrogant facade completely shattered, her hands shaking visibly.
The judge read the verdict form.
"On the count of Aggravated Assault, we find the defendant, Evelyn Vance... Guilty."
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Evelyn closed her eyes, swaying slightly.
"On the count of Reckless Endangerment... Guilty. On the count of Wire Fraud... Guilty. On the charge of Interference with an Emergency Call... Guilty."
Guilty on all counts. It was a clean sweep.
The judge didn't waste any time. Given the severity of the financial crimes combined with the violent assault on a minor, he moved straight to sentencing.
"Evelyn Vance, your actions showed a shocking lack of humanity and a profound level of greed," the judge stated sternly. "You nearly destroyed a young woman's life for a payout. I sentence you to twelve years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for eight years. You are also ordered to pay full restitution to the victim's medical trust."
Evelyn finally broke. She let out a guttural sob, collapsing into her chair. The bailiffs stepped in immediately, hauling her to her feet and clamping handcuffs over her wrists.
"David, please!" she screamed at my father as they dragged her toward the side door. "Don't let them do this! I'm your wife!"
Dad didn't even blink. He looked at her with cold, final detachment.

"Not anymore," he said quietly.
The door slammed shut behind her, cutting off her cries. The nightmare was officially over. We had won.
