Chapter 14 - The 18th Birthday

Two months after graduation, I turned eighteen.

The day started quietly. Dad made a massive pancake breakfast—no barstools in sight, just our sturdy new dining room table. We ate in a comfortable silence that no longer felt loaded with tension or unsaid apologies. We had done the hard work in family therapy; we had rebuilt our trust.

At noon, Mr. Sterling arrived at the house. He set a thick leather binder on the table, opening it to a fresh page with a pristine signature line.

"Happy Birthday," the lawyer smiled warmly. "As of midnight last night, your grandfather's trust has fully vested in your name. You are officially in control of the assets."

I looked down at the documents. It was the same header, the same routing numbers that Evelyn had tried to force me to sign away over a year ago. Only this time, I wasn't a scared teenager cornered in a kitchen. I was an adult, surrounded by people who actually protected me.

"What are you going to do first?" Mr. Sterling asked, handing me a heavy fountain pen.

I signed my name with a flourish, making it official.

"First," I said, looking at Dad. "I'm setting aside my tuition for college this fall. I got accepted into the pre-law program."

Dad beamed with pride.

"And second," I continued. "I'm buying out the rest of the mortgage on this house. It's ours now. Entirely ours. No one can ever hold it over our heads again."

Mr. Sterling nodded approvingly, packing up his briefcase. The money was safe, my future was secure, and the ghost of Evelyn’s greed was finally expelled from our home.
