Chapter 7 - The True Colors Show

I invited them inside, though I didn't offer them anything to drink.
Chloe immediately walked over to the stone fireplace, inspecting the architecture.
"You know, Marcus, if we tore down these ugly logs, we could build a stunning modern glass house here," she said casually.
Marcus winced. "Chloe, stop."
I sat in my rocking chair, crossing my arms.
"You don't own this land, Chloe, so you won't be tearing down anything."
She turned around, her sweet facade dropping instantly.
"Actually, Eleanor, that's why we're here."
"Marcus lost his engineering job last month."
My eyes darted to my son, who stared firmly at the floorboards.
"And instead of cutting back, you kept living in a luxury apartment?" I guessed.
"We have a standard of living to maintain!" Chloe snapped indignantly.
"We need the deed to this cabin, Eleanor."
"We can sell this useless land and pay off our credit card debt."
I actually laughed out loud.
The sheer audacity was breathtaking.
