Chapter 10 - Cutting the Cord

The next morning, I drove down the mountain into the nearest town.

I sat in the office of a local attorney and drafted a new will.

I officially removed Marcus as the beneficiary of my life insurance policy and the deed to the cabin.

Instead, I set up a trust fund that would donate everything to a local charity for single mothers.

It was the hardest signature I had ever written, but it was necessary.

I also called the family trust manager and completely revoked Marcus's emergency access to my savings accounts.

He had made his choice, and now he had to live with the consequences of it.

For the next year, I heard nothing but rumors through old friends.

Chloe had completely drained their remaining credit lines.

They had been evicted from their luxury apartment and were forced to move into a tiny, run-down rental on the edge of town.

Marcus was working two minimum-wage jobs just to keep the lights on, while Chloe refused to work at all.

Every time I heard these updates, I felt a pang of sorrow.

But I knew that rescuing him would only enable her.

He had to hit rock bottom before he could ever climb back up.
