Chapter 3 - The Departure

"Mom, please," Marcus begged, grabbing my wrist.

"Don't do this."

"Let's go back inside, and I will fix this right now."

I looked at his desperate face and felt a profound sadness.

"You can't fix this, Marcus."

"She showed me exactly what she thinks of me, and she showed you exactly who she really is."

Chloe stepped forward, her greed completely overriding her common sense.

"Eleanor, let's not be hasty!" she pleaded, reaching for the envelope.

"We can set up a beautiful table for you right next to the sweetheart table!"

I pulled my hand back, disgusted by the sudden change in her tone.

"You don't want me, Chloe."

"You only want the property."

I looked at my son one last time.

"I love you, Marcus, but I will not be disrespected."

"Happy wedding day."

I got into my car and pulled the door shut.

The valet closed it firmly, stepping back as I started the engine.

In my rearview mirror, I saw Marcus yelling at Chloe, the fairy tale completely shattered.

I drove away into the Savannah night, my heart heavy but my conscience completely clear.
