Chapter 6 - The Subpoena

Two weeks later, the final court date for Maya’s official adoption was rapidly approaching.
We had planned a massive celebration, ordering a custom cake and inviting all of our closest, supportive friends.
The joy in our house was palpable, completely drowning out the lingering shadows of Mark’s parents.
Until the doorbell rang on a rainy Saturday morning.
Mark opened the door to find a stone-faced process server holding a thick manila envelope.
“Mark Vance?” the man asked, holding out a clipboard. “You’ve been served.”
Mark’s face drained of color as he tore open the envelope, rapidly scanning the heavily worded legal documents inside.
I watched his hands begin to tremble with a mixture of disbelief and absolute, unadulterated fury.
“What is it?” I asked, stepping closer to read over his shoulder.
“It’s a petition for Emergency Grandparents' Rights,” Mark spat, tossing the papers onto the entryway table in disgust.
Eleanor and Richard had hired a team of ruthless, high-profile litigators.
They were officially suing Mark for partial custody of Ethan and Olivia, claiming that our home was a "hostile and unstable environment."
Eleanor’s legal petition argued that my presence, and the impending adoption of Maya, was causing severe emotional distress to her biological grandchildren.
She wanted the court to grant her mandatory weekend visitation and the right to make educational decisions for the teenagers.
It was a blatant, desperate power grab designed to drag our names through the mud and stall Maya’s adoption proceedings.
“She is legally claiming that I am an unfit mother to my own stepchildren,” I whispered, reading the vicious allegations printed on the page.
Mark grabbed his coat and his car keys, his eyes completely dark with rage.
“Where are you going?” I panicked, terrified he was going to drive to their estate and do something reckless.
“I am going to end this,” Mark said coldly. “I am going to call my ex-wife.”
My stomach plummeted. Mark’s ex-wife, Jessica, lived three states away and had a strained, complicated relationship with Mark.
Eleanor had undoubtedly counted on Jessica siding with her to strip Mark of his custodial rights.
But an hour later, Mark returned home with a completely different expression on his face.
He didn't look defeated; he looked like a general who had just secured the ultimate weapon.
“Jessica isn't siding with my mother,” Mark announced, a grim smile playing on his lips.

“In fact, Jessica hates my mother more than we do. And she is flying into town tomorrow to testify on our behalf.”
The battlefield had completely shifted, and Eleanor had absolutely no idea the devastating ambush waiting for her in family court.
