Chapter 3 - The Ambush

Three days had passed since the explosive birthday dinner, and our house had settled into a joyful, peaceful routine.

Mark had already scheduled the final court date for the adoption, and the kids were incredibly excited for the official ceremony.

It was a Tuesday afternoon, and Mark was at his corporate office, the older kids were at high school, and Maya was taking her afternoon nap upstairs.

I was in the kitchen, washing dishes and listening to a podcast, completely relaxed.

Suddenly, the heavy brass knocker on the front door echoed through the quiet house.

I dried my hands on a towel and walked to the foyer, checking the security monitor before opening the door.

My blood instantly ran completely cold.

Eleanor Vance was standing on my front porch, wearing a tailored designer suit, her posture rigid and her face hidden behind oversized dark sunglasses.

She wasn't alone; standing next to her was a man holding a sleek leather briefcase, looking every bit like a high-priced corporate shark.

I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open just a few inches, refusing to unlatch the chain.

“Eleanor,” I said coldly. “Mark isn't home, and you are not welcome here.”

Eleanor removed her sunglasses, her eyes scanning my casual jeans and oversized sweater with pure, undisguised disdain.

“I am not here to see my son, Sarah. I am here to speak with you,” she said, her voice dripping with artificial politeness.

“This is Mr. Sterling, the manager of the Vance Family Trust.”

I narrowed my eyes, refusing to open the door any wider. “I don't care who he is. We have nothing to discuss.”

“Oh, I assure you, we do,” Eleanor countered, stepping closer to the doorframe.

“If Mark goes through with this ridiculous adoption, I will legally sever him from the family trust fund.”

I froze, staring at her in absolute disbelief.

“There is currently over twelve million dollars allocated for Mark, Ethan, and Olivia when they reach adulthood,” Eleanor stated smoothly.

“If Mark legally ties a stranger to our bloodline, I will rewrite the will tomorrow. Ethan and Olivia will lose their college funds, their inheritances, everything.”

She pulled a folded piece of paper from her expensive handbag and held it up to the crack in the door.

“This is a contract, Sarah. A post-nuptial agreement specifically waiving any rights to Maya’s adoption.”

Eleanor offered a smile that was entirely devoid of human warmth.

“Sign it, walk away from this delusion, and I will personally transfer two hundred thousand dollars into your private bank account.”

She was actually trying to buy my daughter’s future, threatening to ruin her own biological grandchildren's financial security just to spite me.

I looked at the piece of paper, then directly into Eleanor’s cold, arrogant eyes.

“You are a deeply miserable, pathetic woman,” I whispered, my voice laced with absolute disgust.

“Keep your money, Eleanor. My daughter’s love is not for sale, and Mark’s loyalty cannot be bought.”

I slammed the heavy oak door directly in her face, engaging all three locks with a loud, satisfying click.

My heart was hammering wildly against my ribs, but my resolve was completely unbreakable.

The war had officially begun, and I was going to ensure Eleanor lost absolutely everything.
