Chapter 5 - The Family Council

We ordered pizza, a rare mid-week treat, to ensure the kids were relaxed before dropping the massive truth bomb on them.
Once the kitchen island was cleared and Maya was happily watching cartoons in the adjacent playroom, Mark asked Ethan and Olivia to stay seated.
The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly, the two teenagers sensing the heavy gravity in their father’s tone.
Mark didn't sugarcoat the situation; he treated them with the respect of young adults.
He explained exactly what Eleanor had done that afternoon, detailing the horrific bribe and the threat against their college funds.
Olivia’s mouth fell open in absolute shock, her fork clattering loudly onto her empty plate.
Ethan’s face darkened, his teenage angst instantly converting into a deeply mature, protective anger.
“She threatened to cut off our tuition just to stop you from adopting Maya?” Ethan asked, seeking confirmation of the absolute absurdity.
“Yes,” Mark answered honestly. “And I told her to keep the money. But I wanted you both to know, because it is your inheritance she is holding hostage.”
The room fell into a heavy, contemplative silence.
I held my breath, terrified that they would blame me, terrified that the promise of millions would fracture the beautiful bond we had built.
Ethan looked at his younger sister, then looked directly at me.
“Sarah,” Ethan said, his voice surprisingly calm. “Do you remember when I totaled my car last year, and I was too scared to call Dad?”
I nodded slowly, remembering the frantic midnight phone call and the rush to the police station.
“You came and got me. You sat with me in the precinct, you talked to the cops, and you didn't even yell at me once,” Ethan recalled.
He turned his gaze back to his father.
“Grandma only cares about us when we look good in her country club photos, Dad. Sarah actually shows up when things get ugly.”
Olivia reached across the island and grabbed my hand, squeezing it tightly.
“I don't care about a stupid trust fund,” Olivia stated fiercely, tears welling in her eyes. “I care about Maya, and I care about our family.”
A massive wave of relief crashed over me, completely stealing the breath from my lungs.
Mark wiped a stray tear from his own eye, looking at his teenagers with overwhelming, profound pride.
“I will make sure your college is fully paid for, guys. You have my absolute word,” Mark promised them.
The Vance dynasty thought they could use money as a weapon to destroy our unity.
Instead, Eleanor’s toxic maneuver had forged our blended family into something completely unbreakable.

But a woman like Eleanor, stripped of her control and humiliated, was a deeply dangerous adversary.
If she couldn't win with money, she was going to try and win in the courtroom.
