Chapter 2 - The Ride Home

The doors of Mark’s SUV slammed shut, sealing us inside the quiet, warm sanctuary of the vehicle.

The heavy, oppressive atmosphere of Eleanor’s mansion instantly vanished, replaced by the comforting hum of the engine.

Mark sat in the driver’s seat, gripping the steering wheel, his chest heaving as the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly began to fade.

I sat in the passenger seat, clutching the manila envelope against my chest as if it were made of solid gold.

In the backseat, the three kids were completely silent for a moment before Ethan finally spoke.

“That was the most intense thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” Ethan exhaled, leaning back against the leather seat.

Olivia let out a breathy, nervous laugh. “Grandma looked like she was going to spontaneously combust when you pulled out those papers, Dad.”

Mark looked at his two older children through the rearview mirror, his eyes softening with deep, paternal pride.

“I’m sorry you guys had to witness that,” Mark said softly, putting the car into gear. “I never wanted to put you in the middle of a war with my parents.”

Ethan shook his head firmly. “You didn't put us in the middle, Dad. Grandma did.”

“She’s been making snide comments about Sarah and Maya behind your back for months,” Ethan confessed, looking out the dark window.

“We just didn't know how to tell you without starting a massive fight.”

I turned around in my seat, my heart breaking for the heavy burden these teenagers had been carrying to protect our blended family.

“You don't ever have to protect us from the truth, Ethan,” I told him gently.

Olivia reached over and gently poked Maya’s cheek, causing the little girl to giggle softly in her car seat.

“Besides,” Olivia smiled, “Maya is the best little sister ever. Grandma is just a bitter old snob.”

Mark reached across the center console and intertwined his fingers with mine, squeezing my hand tightly.

“So,” Mark said, looking at me with a brilliant, genuine smile that reached all the way to his eyes.

“How does Maya Vance sound to you?”

Maya clapped her hands in the back seat. “I want to be Maya Vance! Just like Livvy and Ethan!”

A profound, beautiful warmth settled in my chest, completely erasing the trauma of the evening.

We drove through the dark, quiet streets, heading toward a home filled with genuine love, leaving the toxic, conditional affection of the Vance dynasty far behind in the rearview mirror.

But as we pulled into our driveway, I noticed a strange, sleek black sedan parked silently across the street, its headlights switched off.

I felt a sudden, cold prickle of unease on the back of my neck.

Eleanor Vance was a woman who was entirely used to getting exactly what she wanted, when she wanted it.

And I knew, with absolute certainty, that she was not going to let this ultimate humiliation go unpunished.
