Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The custody hearing was over before it began.
Victor arrived in court wearing an orange county jail jumpsuit, his wrists shackled. Chloe had submitted her explosive testimony, and the evidence of his extortion conspiracy with Julian was absolute.
Judge Harrison, the same judge who had nearly left me destitute months ago, looked down at Victor with utter disgust.
“Mr. Sterling, you have manipulated the court, hidden assets, and conspired to extort a mother and her child. Your petition for custody is denied with extreme prejudice. Maya Thorne is granted sole legal and physical custody. You are stripped of all parental rights, and a permanent restraining order is hereby issued.”
The gavel slammed down.
Victor broke down sobbing, begging for mercy, pleading with me as the bailiffs dragged him away. “Maya! Maya, please! I’m the father! You can’t do this!”
I stood up, adjusting my tailored blazer. I looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger, no sadness. Just empty closure.

“You started as a nobody, Victor,” I repeated his words back to him, my voice icy. “And you’re leaving as a nobody.”
I walked out of the courtroom. The air didn't smell like floor wax anymore. It smelled like rain, and freedom.
